The lost Art of the Encore

What has happened to the encore? I've been to many many many gigs, and in my opinion the encore was warranted in 1. (bloc party doing skeleton at the forum - video)

Now, I'm not against a genuine encore, where a band has played their entire set, and caved into audience pressure. They should be special, not dealt out at every single gig. However, I have come to realised that for many gig attendees, the encore is now expected (its special if there isn't one - damn), so I have compiled my encore rules. If you must:

  1. Make the break short (<>
  2. NEVER ever do the MULTIPLE ENCORE, whats the fucking point Metallica.
  3. Play something special, fan favourites (not big songs / hits - these should have been in the set anyway)
  4. Keep me guessing. Put the house lights on or put the DJ back on, makes a nice little surprise when the encore does happen.
There you go, Dasal's rules for encores. Take note you 1000's of bands that are reading this, my opinion rocks.

I agree. No encores. Ever. Except when there's a certain atmosphere that yousometimes gte, just when the band is really on, the corwd's really into it, and everything just happens right. The only time that's really happened for me and it hasn't seemed like a formality was the first time I saw the Hold Steady - I'm pretty sure they always end their encores with Killer Parties, which is sort of understandable, but they also played a piano/vocals only "Certain Songs" and a fucking amazing version of Most People are DJs. Their whole "thing" is to do with the (cliche alert) "redemptive power of rock and roll", and that encore worked perfectly in that context.

The only other kind of encore that is good is the drunk cover encore. They are always an exception.

How many typos are there in that comment? I'm not drunk. Honest.

a few things

- that Bloc Party gig; they were pretty rubbish that night and I wasn't really that bothered about them doing an encore. but since it was 'skeleton' i guess it was ok.

- i kinda agree with the no encores. especially not scripted ones. i think the only time in recent times i have seen a genuince encore was at Fanfarlo and that was only semi-genuine.

- BUT if the band does go off and the house lights don't go up then you know the band is going to come back on but I hate it when people take it for granted and just stand there not clapping or cheering or anything. maybe they're doing some kind of silent protest but i doubt it; a real protest would be them storming out.

true true, that bloc party gig was truely mediocre, but i reckon it was one of the only real encores i've seen, even if it did break rule 2.

I'm going to carry on my silent protest at gigs if i reckon the encore is scripted, i'm a one man army. I'm not walking out because i paid the money to see the set, and in my eyes a scripted encore is equivalent to a band standing on stage for 3 minutes doing jack shit in the middle of their set, something i don't particularly want to cheer along.

it's funny you should say that; when i went to see LostProphets (it was years ago) instead of going off for an encore they just sat on the stage and waited until they were satisfied with the cheering before continuing with the gig.

heck that's just plain rockstar ego to the 1000000000000 degree, and i use the term "rockstar" loosely

yes Dasal youre opinion does indeed rock and the 1000's of bands reading it will surely take note.

When I saw streetlight manifesto at the peel in december they finished their set and explained to the crowd that they had an encore but they were seriously low on time due to the venue noise cut-off point. They turned round for 1 second then back again for an instant encore. Not very special but v tongue in cheek.

Also, I've heard some band called Radio Head are rather keen of the ol multiple encore.
